There are over 200 volcanoes, many of them still active, that contain huge calderas, acid lakes, geysers and natural thermal springs. A small eruption in 1956 produced pyroclastic flows from the summit crater. The cone of Koryaksky is likely to collapse at some time in the next few thousand years; if this follows the style of the collapse of Avacha 30.000 years ago, it will cause massive destruction to the Petropavlovsk area.
