The North West Highlands are considered by many to be one of the last wilderness regions of Europe. The area can be reached relatively quickly from the conurbations in the central belt, but the real adventure of visiting this vast area is to penetrate into the remote mountain areas accessible only by foot. In many cases this requires a short holiday.

The remote west can be thought of as the area immediately east of, and including Knoydart. The Knoydart peninsula contains three of the most cherished Munros in Scotland on account of the difficulty in reaching them - usually by the long walk into Barrisdale along the shores on Loch Hourn. Surprisingly for such a remote district, the area boasts an excellent campsite and bothy.
