The northern half of Nepal is dominated by the huge peaks of the Himalayan mountain chain, the highest mountains in the world. Indeed of the fourteen mountains over 8,000 metres, eight are in Nepal.

Mount Everest, called Sagarmatha by the Nepalese, Chomolungma by the Sherpas and Tibetans, and Qomolangma by the Chinese, at 8848 metres, or 29,028 feet high, is the highest point on the planet.
