The northern half of Nepal is dominated by the huge peaks of the Himalayan mountain chain, the highest mountains in the world. Indeed of the fourteen mountains over 8,000 metres, eight are in Nepal.

Annapurna I (8191m/26,545ft), is the tenth highest mountain in the world. The mountain lies to the north west of the Annapurna Sanctuary, a huge bowl of mountains three days walk from Pokhara. It was first climbed in 1950 by the French pair of Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal.
